Everything you need to know about insurance coverage, payment options, and costs at Family Psychiatry and Therapy

Insurance We Accept in New Jersey and New York

Family Psychiatry and Therapy makes it easy to use your insurance for psychiatry and therapy services. Whether you have in-network coverage, out-of-network benefits, or prefer to pay privately, our team will help you understand your options before your first appointment. We serve patients throughout all of New Jersey and New York via our secure telehealth platform.

In-Network Insurance Providers

We are in-network with the following insurance plans, meaning your visits are covered at the lowest out-of-pocket cost to you:

Out-of-Network Coverage and Billing Assistance

If your insurance plan is not listed above, you can still receive care at Family Psychiatry and Therapy. We work with many insurance companies as an out-of-network provider, and most plans offer out-of-network mental health benefits that cover a significant portion of your visit cost.

We offer out-of-network billing assistance to simplify the process. Our team can submit claims to your insurance company on your behalf so you do not have to manage the paperwork yourself. We also provide superbills — detailed receipts that contain all the information your insurer needs to process a reimbursement claim — for patients who prefer to submit claims directly.

How to Check Your Mental Health Insurance Benefits

Before your first appointment, we recommend calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card. Here are some helpful questions to ask your insurance company:

  • What are my mental health benefits for outpatient therapy and psychiatry?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy or psychiatry visit?
  • How many mental health visits does my plan cover per calendar year?
  • Do I need a referral or prior authorization for outpatient mental health care?
  • How much does my plan reimburse for an out-of-network mental health provider?
  • What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much of it has been met this year?

Payment Options for Therapy and Psychiatry

Private Pay (Self-Pay)

Private pay offers the highest level of confidentiality for your mental health care. When you choose self-pay, your personal information, diagnostic codes, treatment details, and session notes remain strictly between you and your care team. No information is shared with an insurance company, giving you complete control over your privacy and allowing us to focus entirely on your care without external reporting requirements.

We offer competitive private pay rates for initial psychiatric evaluations, follow-up medication management visits, and individual therapy sessions. Please contact our office at (201) 977-2889 for current self-pay pricing.

Accepted Payment Methods

We accept the following forms of payment:

  • All major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover)
  • Debit cards
  • Personal checks
  • HSA (Health Savings Account) and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) cards

Payment is collected at the time of service. For insured patients, any applicable copay, coinsurance, or deductible amount is due at the time of your appointment.

Frequently Asked Billing Questions

Does Family Psychiatry and Therapy accept my insurance?

Family Psychiatry and Therapy is in-network with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, NJ/NY Personal Injury Protection (no-fault auto insurance), NJ/NY Workers’ CompensationFederal Workers’ Compensation (DOL/OWCP), Local 164 and 102 Electrical Unions, and Braven Insurance. If your plan is not listed, we can still provide care as an out-of-network provider and help you submit claims for reimbursement.

What happens if my insurance is out-of-network?

If your insurance plan is out-of-network, you can still receive treatment at our practice. Many plans offer out-of-network mental health benefits that reimburse a substantial portion of the visit cost. Our team provides out-of-network billing assistance — we can submit claims to your insurer directly on your behalf. We also provide superbills for patients who prefer to submit claims themselves. Call or text us at (201) 977-2889 and we will check your out-of-network benefits before your first appointment.

What is a superbill and how does it work?

A superbill is a detailed receipt provided by your healthcare provider that includes your date of service, diagnosis codes (ICD-10), procedure codes (CPT), provider information, and the amount you paid. You submit the superbill to your insurance company to request reimbursement for out-of-network mental health visits. At Family Psychiatry and Therapy, we provide superbills after each session and also offer to submit out-of-network billing on your behalf to simplify the reimbursement process.

How much does a therapy or psychiatry visit cost?

Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your insurance plan, including your copay, coinsurance percentage, and whether your deductible has been met. For patients with in-network insurance (Horizon BCBS, Aetna, Medicare), your cost is determined by your specific plan benefits. For self-pay patients, we offer competitive rates — contact our office at (201) 977-2889 for current pricing on initial evaluations, medication management, and therapy sessions.

Is online therapy billed the same as in-person visits?

Yes. Telehealth visits are billed in the same way as in-person appointments. Your insurance benefits, copays, and coverage apply equally to online therapy and psychiatry sessions. All of our services are available via a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform to patients throughout New Jersey and New York, so you receive the same quality of care from the comfort and privacy of your home.

Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for mental health services?

Yes. Therapy sessions, psychiatric evaluations, and medication management appointments are eligible expenses under most Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). You can use your HSA or FSA debit card to pay your copay, coinsurance, or full session fee at the time of your visit. This is a tax-advantaged way to pay for mental health care.

Do you offer payment plans for mental health treatment?

We understand that mental health care is an important investment in your well-being. If you have questions about managing the cost of your care, please contact our office to discuss your options. We are committed to making treatment for depression, anxietyADHDPTSD, and other conditions accessible, and we will work with you to find a solution that fits your situation.

What is the cancellation and no-show policy?

We require at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Late cancellations and no-shows are subject to a $50 fee. We understand that unexpected situations come up — if you need to reschedule, please call or text us at (201) 977-2889 as soon as possible so we can offer your appointment time to another patient in need.

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist or therapist?

In most cases, you do not need a referral to schedule an appointment with Family Psychiatry and Therapy. However, some insurance plans — especially HMO plans — may require a referral from your primary care physician before covering mental health visits. We recommend checking with your insurance company to confirm whether a referral is required under your specific plan.
