Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication, while therapists provide counseling and psychotherapy without prescribing medication.
How do I know if I need therapy or psychiatric treatment?
Therapy can be beneficial if you’re experiencing emotional distress, struggling with relationships, or facing significant life challenges. In addition, when medication management is necessary for mental health conditions, psychiatric treatment is recommended.
What can I expect during my first treatment session?
Your initial appointment primarily involves an information-gathering session with one of our care providers. We strive to learn as much about you and your history as possible in a short amount of time. It enables us to evaluate your concerns and potentially determine a diagnosis appropriately. Since a diagnosis often helps guide treatment, it constitutes a critical part of the process.
We deeply understand that your story is exclusively yours and highly personal. However, a person is not simply a diagnosis despite what general perceptions might suggest. We firmly believe this and do not view individuals who seek our help in such a manner. Instead, we regard each person as unique, experiencing pain and needing assistance.
You are the sole narrator of your life story. As we meet for the first time, remember that you are the foremost expert in your life. We’re not here to judge you. On the contrary, our primary role is to listen to you and strive to become the world’s second-most knowledgeable person about you (with you being the first).
So feel confident that, during that initial session, we don’t know you as well as you know yourself. Freely share your story and tell us — what brings you to us today?
How long does treatment usually last?
The duration of therapy varies depending on individual needs and goals. Some therapies may last a few weeks, while others may extend for months or longer
How often should I attend treatment sessions?
The frequency of therapy sessions can vary depending on your needs, availability, and treatment plan. Initially, weekly sessions are common, but it can be adjusted based on progress and goals.
Can therapy or psychiatric treatment help with medication management?
Yes, psychiatrists can provide medication management as part of your treatment plan. In addition, therapists can collaborate with psychiatrists to ensure integrated care.
How can therapy or psychiatric treatment help with stress and anxiety?
Therapy and psychiatric treatment can help identify the underlying causes of stress and anxiety, develop coping strategies, provide emotional support, and introduce relaxation techniques or medication when appropriate.
